Paradigm in Time is the solo music project of Memphis, TN guitarist, songwriter, and producer Lauren D. Cain. Originally formed in 2012 as an open musical collaboration, it came about after over a decade of bandmate fallout during her high school and college years, during which she observed that the idiosyncratic tendency of her creative vision and music direction often resulted in a lot of ideas getting lost in translation with the musicians she hoped to work with.
Following this realization, in 2014, Paradigm in Time transitioned into a full solo effort. Despite this, the original premise of collaboration still remained; though eventually Lauren added her name to the title as a way of distinguishing herself as the project leader, regardless of the form that it took, to draw attention to her multifaceted role.
She is often assumed to be just “the singer of the band” by people who come across her multitracked recordings, and aims to set the record straight by always emphasizing that she is also the primary (if not sole) writer, producer, and performer. She believes that making a point of this will help extinguish the ongoing history of mainstream society’s limited perception of the capabilities, and diversity of talents and interests, of black, female-presenting musicians.
Lauren mixes her interests in fantasy, nature, existentialism, and outer space, soundtracks her often vivid and sometimes poignant psychological experience, and channels her metalhead-at-heart sensibilities, exploring them all in many creative media that include, but are not limited to, song.
